The Take-off
Today is the day we waited ages for. It almost seems like yesterday, that we booked our flights and finally decided on actually doing this tour.
The timing to leave today, sitting on the plane over New year's, it's a great decision for us. This way we had the chance to spend the Christmas with our beloved families and prepare ourselves for the big adventure. Though, as always, it became quite stressful in the last days/ hours. Suddenly, there are million things to be done and some uneasiness in the stomach region makes itself noticeable. However, we assume this is pretty typical.
Now our bags are packed: We'll both take our backpacks as hand luggage on the plane and we'll use old suitcases, that are ready to be thrown away for the luggage we can't take as hand luggage e.g. trekking poles, liquids etc.
Today we want to wish you all a happy new year, full of health, happiness and joy. We are now heading of to the airport. Next Stop: Dubai, Sydney and Wellington. Talk to you in 2017!

Heute ist tatsächlich der Tag auf den wir Monate gewartet haben. Es fühlt sich zwar an wie gestern, dass wir Anfang November und nach langer Überlegungsphase dazu entschlossen haben unsere Idee in die Tat umzusetzen, doch dass es heute wirklich los geht, können wir noch nicht recht begreifen..
Wir hatten über Weihnachten noch schöne Tage bei unseren Familien und könnten noch einmal viel gemeinsame Zeit verbringen. Die letzten Tage waren dann aber doch einmal relativ gespickt mit last-Minute Vorbereitungen. Einigen Paketen sind wir zum Schluss noch entgegenfahren um sie rechtzeitig zu erhalten. Doch nun geht es los! Nach monatelanger Vorfreude, machte sich jetzt auch ein wenig Unwohlsein im Bauchbereich breit - aber das gehört wohl dazu!
Nun geht es gleich zum Flughafen. Nächster Stopp Dubai, dann Sydney und schließlich am 1. Januar um 14 Uhr Wellington. Wir wünschen Euch ein frohes, gesegnetes neues Jahr 2017, voller Gesundheit, Lebensfreude und tollen Erlebnissen.

Maybe you can help me on 2 questions :
- Were you allowed to use the Osprey Exos 58 as an hand luggage on the planes ?
- Did your GPS setup with open source maps and gpx file from the ta trust website worked well ? Any advice on that aspect ? (I'm planning to use my Garmin etrex 20 and/or the iHikeGPS app on Iphone)

Hi Mick, thank you very much for your compliments. 1) Yes, we took our the Osprey Exos 58 as hand luggage (with Emirates and Quantas) and this was not a problem at all. We used a very old suit case, which was checked-in, to store the trekking poles etc. and disposed the suit case once in New Zealand. 2) We discussed this topic a lot in advance. Once in New Zealand, we learned, that the new "Te Araroa" App was published in October 16. The app is just brilliant, gives you all water sources and possible freedom camping spot including very reliable GPS. This app makes all other GPS devices useless. It's the best you can get and saves you the weight of the GPS device. We send our GPS device home after two weeks.
