Day 45: Mueller Hut to Twizel
physical condition: 10/10
mood: 10/10

We woke up at 5:45am and climbed up the closest summit east of Mueller Hut, Mount Olivier. To reach the top before sunrise we had to cross a big snow field, in which Julia sank into up to her hips. Further up we scrambled across some big boulders and were rewarded for our hard work in the morning with a spectacular 360 degrees view and the first day light. We literally were on top of the world, having a thick layer of clouds further down in the valley. A great start into a new day. On our way down we again enjoyed the spectacular views with the surrounding glaciers and constantly roaring avalanches. 300m below we reached the cloud layer, coating us into thick fog - no more views for us, but fair enough. We had four spectacularly clear and sunny days at Mount Cook, not a lot of people are so lucky. Later in the afternoon we took a shuttle back to Twizel and spend a great last evening with Matthias with some super tasty food and a decent beer. To our joy, Samuel and Julia, the Austrian couple, finally caught up, too and joined in at our dinner party.

Day 46: Twizel to the Beginning of Lake Ohau, 22,5km
physical condition: 6/10
mood: 6/10

Today we unfortunately have to say goodbye to our special guest. We were quite sad to see Matthias leaving, but are very greatful for the amazing days we spend with him. It was so much fun to walk, cycle and laugh together. He was a great company in the last 10 days. While Matthias caught a bus towards Christchurch, we followed our routine: resupply, get organised, pack the (now again heavy) backpack for 6 days and start walking again. We first thought about taking a rest day, since Hauke has a mild cold (reason for the decreased physical condition), but everything is fully booked out due to a Hollywood movie film being filmed close by. To our joy, Samuel and Julia will walk with us the next section, reuniting the group from a couple of weeks ago. While walking along Lake Ruataniwha and a river we had lot to chat about. Since we only took off by 1pm we ended up walking in the extremely hot afternoon sun. 30 degrees and almost no shade made this section fairly tiring. In the evening we found a beautiful campspot at Lake Ohau.

Day 47: Lake Ohau campspot to some freedom campspot behind the first saddle, 23km
physical condition: 7/10
mood: 8/10

Lets summarize the day with three words: hot, heavy, uphill. Well ok, the scenery was quite spectacular. First we strolled along the pretty Lake Ohau and one of the most beautiful lunch spots on the whole trip. From here, we had to climb up 800m towards a saddle. Luckily half way went through a Beech Forest. Even in the shade, it was almost too hot to walk. Our heavy backpacks did not make it easier. We had another long break to wait for the temperature to drop off a bit at the bush line. The last 300m uphill and 4km were really exhausting. We were quite glad to reach the camp for the night, a cute spot at km 2485 close to The Ahururi River East Branch.

Day 48: Campspot (2485km) to Private Hut, 27km
physical condition: 8/10
mood: 7/10

Today we travelled down the East- Ahuriri River Branch valley. The first section was quite narrow, but later on the valley widened up and travelling became more easy. Right after lunch time we faced the biggest river crossing of the official Te Araroa track. Due to the very good and stable weather conditions in the last week, the water levels were low making this crossing straight forward for us. However, if the levels are too high, there is an alternative route across a bridge 5 km down the valley. We decided to move further up the next valley, the beginning of the Breast Hill Track. This track will take us to Wanaka, a nice town close to Queenstown. At 6 pm we set up camp next to a private farming hut, just before the 700m climb towards Martha saddle.

Day 49 Private hut to Top Timaru Hut, 13,5km
Physical condition 5/10
Mood: 7/10

After Hauke almost got rid of his cold, now Julia got it during night time. Still we got up at 6 am to make our way up. Even though Julia didn't feel well, we are a lot fitter than at the beginning of the trail and made it to the saddle in less than two hours. We actually find it quite exciting to see how got you get. It's now a lot more fit to walk uphill than it was in the beginning. The track down hill was easy going and we already reached the hit by noon. To get rid off this cold and since it is a cute hut to stay in, we decided to have half a rest day and spend the afternoon with sleeping, playing cards and reading - could be worse.

Day 50: Top Timaru Hut to Stodys Hut, 15km
physical condition: 6/7
mood: 8/10

After lots of rain in January, the sun is finally paying off for all the wet days. We do love and hate the sun at the same time. On one hand it's lovely to walk in good condition, lots better than being soaked, but at the same time, the sun is so increadibly strong here. Not like at home, noon is the hottest time of the day, but peak temperatures can be recorded between 4 and 6 pm. Therefore we normally avoid big climbs in the afternoon sun, but it did not work out today. First, the track lead through a steep forestry valley, climbing up and down to avoid canyon sections or to cross to the other river side. Although we were "only" following another river, caution must be payed all time while scrambling up rocky parts or sidling super steep scree slopes with nothing in between you and the river 100m below yourself. Unfortunately, Julia was still not feeling well, but Aspirin complex did it's job. For lunch we found a cute little campspot right next to the river and under some trees, donating the essential shade. Here, we rested for 3 hours enjoying the sounds of nature, playing "Doppelkopf" and taking a nap. This was just enough recovery to face one of the steepest climbs on the Te Araroa trail: 550m straight up, mostly on a unformed, sandy track and using up a lot of energy trying not to slip backwards downhill. As strenuous as it was, we still enjoy climbing up. It is so rewarding to look backwards in have the view fullfilled with achievement. Finally, it is the best feeling to reach the top while being fully covered in sweat and pride at the same time. From the ridge it was only a short sidling stroll to Stodys Hut, where we camped for the night.

Day 51: Stodys Hut to Glenrock Reserve, 16,5km
physical condition: 7/10
mood: 10/10

Another, so called Te Araroa highlight day, lays ahead of us. From the hut we walked a more easy going track than yesterday on a ridge across a couple of hills towards the summit of Breast Hill. At the top all the climbing in the last two days payed off with a spectacular view down to Lake Hawea, Wanaka and across to Mount Aspiring National Park. The beauty of this country simply manages to overwhelm us again and again, offering new landscapes and sceneries everytime. Additionally, we have been so fortunate with the weather conditions. We always had good weather when needed and did not miss out any highlight day due to bad weather. We are so grateful for that. After another looooong break on the summit including sun bathing, view bathing and relax time, we descended towards Pakuturi Hut, where we quickly used the pleasures of the hut (water and toilet) and then made our way down along a very exposed and dramatic ridge towards Lake Hawea, always keeping the cooling blue water of the lake in view and dreaming of the refreshing bath later this afternoon. Just by 3 pm we dipped finally into it. It's such an amazing feeling to jump into the crystal clear, perfectly tempered water after six days of remote backcountry experience and hot, sweaty days.

Day 52: Glenrock Reserve to Wanaka, 7km
physical condition: 7/10
mood: 10/10

We got up early to make it into Lake Hawea Village just in time for brekkie. After 7km we reached the cafe by 8:30am and had our well deserved coffee with muesli, fresh fruits and Eggs Benedict. This is our favourite moment when reaching town! We enjoyed the roof top terrace for quite a while before heading towards the highway. There is a bigger track going into Wanaka, another 30km away. But since we heard that it is little spectacular and less interesting, we decided to skip this last bit. Before we reached the perfect try-to-find-a-hitch position, a nice Kiwi woman already had pulled over. Wow, before we could realise that we already found a hitch, we were in Wanaka. Wanaka is a cute little city at the Lake side with lots of cafes and bars, a perfect place to spend two rest days. We'll use this to sort out how to go on. The track is slowly coming to an end, having only ~450km left. The last bit is known to be a bit less spectacular while it passes some of the most famous national parks. We are thinking of leaving out the original track here for a while and taking an alternative route towards south. But you'll see, so stay tuned.
