Final weeks


After some quiet weeks, we are back on our blog. Before heading off to New Zealand in 13 days, we had to face three major exams in the last 10 days. Therefore we had to take a little break from the Te Araroa organization. Those exams are now history and nothing is holding us back from taking off to New Zealand. Almost all gear is ready and set, just our Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) is giving us some trouble. Here, we might be dependent on the support of some friends in Hanover :) Anyway, we'll figure it out! 

Tomorrow is going to be a big day for us. Michael, is going to move in our flat for three months. He is a young engineer, who is going to start working in his first position in a city close to Hanover. We wish him all the best for his time here in Hanover and a fantastic start into the new year. 

While Michael makes himself comfy at our home, we'll be heading north to spend some time with our families before taking off to New Zealand. First stop will be Wittmund, Haukes home town. Apart from visiting his family, we definitely have to eat some fresh fish-sandwich (speciality from this region), buy some last-minute Christmas presents and finish the last bits and peaces for our Te Araroa adventure e.g. seam seal the tent, print maps and write a supply shopping list for Wellington. 

As you can see, we'll have some busy days, but very exiting and happy ones!

Nachdem wir in den letzten beiden Wochen wenig von uns hören gelassen haben, möchten wir Euch ein kurzes Update geben. Bevor wir in 13 Tagen in den Flieger nach Neuseeland steigen, mussten wir noch drei große Klausuren schreiben. Aus diesem Grund musste die Neuseelandvorbereitung die letzten 14 Tage ruhen. Seit Freitag steht nun unserer Reise keine größere Hürde mehr im Weg. Fast alle Ausrüstungsteile sind zusammen gesammelt und gepackt. Nur ein Paket lässt ein wenig auf sich warten. Hoffentlich, kommt unser Personal Locator Beacon (ein Satelliten Notrufgerät) noch rechtzeitig an. Jetzt aber erstmal Schritt für Schritt: Morgen wird Michael unsere Wohnung für die nächsten 3 Monate beziehen. Michael ist Ingenieur und wird seine erste Arbeitsstelle in der Nähe von Hannover antreten. Die Zeit wird er nutzen um eine eigene Wohnung zu finden. Wir wünschen Michael alles Gute für seine Zeit, hoffen, dass er sich wohl fühlt und wünschen Ihm viel Erfolg bei der Wohnungssuche!

Der Eine zieht ein, die Anderen aus. Morgen Abend werden wir die Reise in das schöne Ostfriesland antreten um noch ein paar Tage bei unseren Familien zu verbringen. Nebenbei müssen noch ein paar Kleinigkeiten für Weihnachten besorgt werden, Kekse gebacken werden, noch einmal ein richtiges Fischbrötchen gegessen werden und - ganz wichtig - die letzten Feinheiten für unsere Reise geplant werden. Zum Beispiel müssen die Wanderkarten ausgedruckt werden, die Einkaufsliste für Wellington muss geschrieben werden. Der Countdown läuft -  jetzt wird jede Minute genossen, endlich Weihnachtsstimmung gelebt und viel Zeit mit der Familie verbracht.

30 days to go!


Today we would like to make a short notice only. But is't definitely worth a note: we hit the 1 month deadline! In more or less 720 hours we'll be entering the first plane on our way to New Zealand. Since we started our blog a month ago, we've working quite intensely on planning the trip and the gear list. Now we need to "denewzealandize" a bit again, since we will be facing three big exams in about two weeks. In the week before and after Christmas final prep stuff such as printing the maps, getting trail notes etc on our phones, shopping some resupplies for the bounce boxes eg. batteries, sunscreen, toothpaste and spending time with the family.

Kia Ora.

 Today I started counting days. It's now officially less than two months to go until we head of to NZ and there still heaps of thing to do. As you can see on the picture, autumn fully hit Hannover, foreboding the cold. Apart from a fair bit of gear that is still missing, the ferry from Wellington to Picton needs to be booked, we have think about the best way to get a NZ registered PLB (personal locator beacon) and we are still working on the blog. Having quite an intense time at uni as well, keeps us pretty busy.

 Today our merino wool shirts from Engelhorn arrived. We both have 100% Merino long base layers (long shirt+long john) and two T-shirts made out of Merino and Lyocell (50:50). We are so exited to finally wear them on the trail. The shirts are light weight and super soft. The material creates a very natural and pleasant feeling on the skin. On the trail we'll see whether they hold up to, to what the promise.

 Kia Ora mein Freund.

 heute haben offiziell begonnen die Tage zu zählen. Es sind nun weniger als zwei Monate bei zu unserem Abflug und es gibt noch jede viele Dinge zu erledigen. Einige Ausrüstung fehlt noch, die Fähre von Wellington nach Picton muss gebucht werden und verschiedene Themen wie z.B. SOS-Gerät müssen noch einmal genauer recherchiert und organisiert werden. Neben der intensiven Uni-Phase, die wir gerade bewerkstelligen, hält uns die Te Araroa Orga ganz schön busy.
